In a few short weeks, the SOSH website will be completely updated to include a section for Education news, schedules and updates as they become available. Also, and in a few short weeks, please watch for the chapter newsletter and a postcard or two, which will provide you with details on the educational offerings in store for you as a member (or soon to be a member) of the South Shore Chapter #43.

With so many topic or course choices and decisions to be made in the near future, perhaps we should review course content for maximum education and training value.

CPIM Locations:

SOSH is always looking for additional locations to conduct CPIM review programs. Currently, we have some classroom access in Plymouth, Braintree, Quincy, Stoughton, Avon and Mansfield. We are on an active hunt however, for new and alternative locations to provide maximum coverage and convenience for the traveling SOSH student. Please contact me to discuss using your facility as a education/workshop site.

CPIM Status:

For some, CPIM certification will be a new journey – a new quest. To you, please allow me to extend a hearty welcome. If you are considering CPIM as a personal or professional medium for recognition or achievement or job advancement or success (not a bad thing), you will recognize that this distinction is generally value added at your workplace. APICS has reported that CPIM can provide employees with as much as a 25% increase to your salary. A quick check to the classifieds in the Sunday Boston Globe should convince any member that the CPIM recognition is widely recognized by prospective employers in the area and confirmed via our job bank opportunities.

Or – Some chapter members and non members from your companies, have started down the pathway toward CPIM, but for whatever reason, have failed to complete the mission. Send me a note indicating which CPIM modules you need to achieve your CPIM certification and we will attempt to build a program that accommodates as many candidates as possible during the 2005-2006 year.

Workshops and Seminars:

Over the next year, SOSH is planning and prepared to offer the membership and surrounding areas with a series of workshops and seminars. The chapter has not made final commitments to a Fall of Lean and a Spring of Inventory Management or Vice Versa. We also plan to provide Presentation Skills and Team Building workshops.

SOSH will rely on membership opinion and input to determine the best match of product to demand, so please expedite your selection and advance your thoughts as they pertain to the courses or topics desired for your future workshops and seminars. For the time being, SOSH will consider topics from an Inventory Management series and a lean operations series, and from a presentation skills development series which includes team building.

Inventory Management Series

Basics of Inventory Management

For most organizations, inventory is one of the more visible and tangible aspects of doing business. Beginning with the management of suppliers delivering raw materials to goods in various levels of completion in the production process to management and delivery of finished goods in the distributions channel, each type represents money tied up until the inventory becomes purchased products. The workshop provides a broad overview of basic concepts and good inventory management strategies.

MRP and BOM

To effectively use a material requirements planning (MRP) system, it is essential to understand how bills of material (BOMs) are structured and how MRP calculates requirements. This course includes instruction and exercises so students can practice these important concepts. From structuring simple BOMs to creating phantom bills, modular bills, and super bills, the participant will learn many ways to use BOMs, how to calculate material requirements, and some common action/exception messages that MRP systems frequently include.

Physical Inventory

This workshop will discuss what works and what doesn't as the participant learns the essential preparation steps and activities to perform in advance. These activities include everything from cleanup and sorting to working with auditors. The best physical inventories require the best, most thorough, preparation. The participant will also learn how to keep the physical inventory under control once it starts. From tracking of tags to weigh scales and facility maps to handling recounts, this course guides the way.

Cycle Counting

In this workshop, the participants will learn how to implement or improve a cycle counting program and what the real purpose of cycle counting is: finding and fixing the causes of inventory errors. Also included are several methods for selecting items to count, using correct accounting techniques, and reconciling any outstanding transactions. In addition, the participant will learn various reporting methods to illustrate the results of the cycle counting program to employees and management.

Distribution Inventory Management

This workshop focuses on the distribution network model and its objectives, activities, and distribution inventory management decisions and includes interactive exercises to present the fundamental concepts associated with the distribution environment. It is appropriate for management, sales, purchasing, forecasting, materials management, operations personnel, and shipping/ receiving and any other supply chain function tangent to the distribution activity

Lean Manufacturing Series

Introduction to Lean Manufacturing

This workshop presents procedures and tools companies use to identify and eliminate waste to become lean.

5 S

The 5 S method detailed in this workshop provides a foundation for delivering high-quality products and services in the right quantity at the right time to satisfy customer needs. The 5 S method is a perfect starting point for companies to begin their journey toward lean as well as an intermediate step to emphasize the value of workplace organization and process discipline.

Presentation Skills Development Series

These workshops are the premier source for preparing your training personnel to be effective in the classroom environment. These modules focus on the “PIPA” principle: Prepare; Involve; Perform; and Affirm!

Train-the-Trainer and Learning Dynamics are both highly intensive and participative workshops. They involve approximately 18 hours of instruction which will provide practical techniques easily applied to any type of training or presentation

Workshops include videotaping of class participants as they demonstrate their ability to present short 5-10 minute lessons. This allows for constructive critique and an opportunity for trainers to learn how the audience sees them.

Workshops are unique in their ability to provide a fun and safe atmosphere for any instructor to develop a presentation style that is guaranteed to maximize effectiveness. Whether your employees are novice trainers or college professors, these workshops are sure to provide them with helpful tools and techniques

Train-the-Trainer

Train-the-Trainer provides a fundamental understanding of presentations skills. Lesson plans include communication, effective media use, motivating learners and meeting room layout. All techniques are demonstrated by the instructors and participants learn by doing. This course is a basic requirement for most decision makers today.

Learning Dynamics for Instructors

LDI is an advanced workshop for individuals who have completed TTT and have some training experience. LDI reviews the basic TTT concepts and expands upon these to include classroom dynamics. Topics: adult learning styles; appropriate training methods; effective questioning; how to use feedback; and handling challenging situations.

Workshop Locations:

A few locations have been suggested and would serve the chapter very well as host sites (hotels) for these workshops/seminars. However, a real value added experience would be to combine a workshop with a plant tour. Therefore, SOSH is looking to discover your interest in hosting a workshop or seminar from the above list. Please contact me at your convenience, but this will be on a first come first serve basis. We will also discuss the optional but valuable addition of a plant tour of your facility - to learn of the failures or successes of the topic workshop.

Please advise me if any of the above courses or workshops or seminars are right for you and your company. I would be pleased to discuss your education and training needs – short and long term. Customized education programs, including daytime and In-house are available. Please check the SOSH website or contact me at your convenience.
